Greetings! just a line to say that the fifth Feast Film & Forum event was held last night at Happy Dancing Turtle with excellent attendance.The topic was Bees, with films and Don Jackson on hand to field questions about the current state of affairs in bees and honey production. As you probably have heard, the numbers of bees have been in sharp decline in recent years, due to various factors, and mainly from pesticide use. So much so, that major crop production that depends on pollination (like most plants) are coming under threat. In attendance were several bee keepers, with different levels of experience from beginners to veterans, and great questions. The main film was Tales From the Hive, a NOVA production, and then a televised interview with Don from TPT. He encourages people to join the North Central Bee Keepers Association which meets regularly in Brainerd. Go online for information.
We are exploring a further series in the fall, featuring Harvesting. Stay tuned for this.

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River MN 4/17/14
Greetings! The annual business meeting was held yesterday at Mary's house in Pine River. Routine matters were addressed and a tentative calendar set through December. The month of May still has two meetings scheduled, one on May 10 to assemble packets for STOP to be given to sexual assault victims coming into the Brainerd program. The second meeting is on May 17th, where we will welcome our guest pastor, Suzanne Wasilczuk, for her sermon of song and hope. We are planning for a good turnout!
Plans are moving forward on several fronts. We will be looking into fund raising opportunities, not a garage sale this year! But perhaps something we can offer in several venues as events move along....The TTTT is still with us, and emails have gone out to Fargo-Morehead UUs and Anton Truer at BSU as possible locations as hosts; also CLC has indicated they would accept certain titles, perhaps in their Native American collection, so that is not ruled out. We have perhaps 25-30 titles at this writing, mostly Native American authors.....a bookplate would be very nice, to explain the source and goals of the Tour.
Over the summer, when usually a monthly picnic is scheduled, we decided to join the Pride picnic at the Kiwanis Park in Brainerd on June 14, where we could set up a table with information and perhaps items for the public, making available the calendar and handouts. July 12 and August 16 are dates set for picnics at Pine River in the park.
For the fall programs, although nor yet firmed up, a Water Service in September, Letting Go of God in September and October, Columbus in October, a Thanksgiving dinner at Mary's and discussion of Behind the Kitchen Door in November, Solstice party at Barb's and Chalica celebration in December. Please watch the newsletter, this blog, and the website for better information. This is ambitious, but enthusiasm abounds!

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River MN 4/12/14
Greetings! Today we met for the second annual Flower Celebration, in honor of Dr. Norbert Capek, founder of the Czech Unitarian Church in Prague in the 20s.
He originated the Flower Service, in which members and visitors bring flowers for exchange, to commemorate the return of spring and recommitment to the Church. His story is a moving one, being arrested and killed by the Nazis in 1942. We do not have many so martyred in UU history, and surely he is not alone; but his courage and devotion to his beliefs are to be emulated and remembered.
A couple of announcements. The next meeting has been moved to April 16, at 10:30, at Mary's house in Pine River. We will be doing annual business, electing officers, taking care of the budget, setting the calendar. A potluck lunch will be provided. Any UUs and like minded fellow travelers are welcome to attend and get involved. This takes the place of the regularly schedules meeting on April 26.
The Peace folks in Brainerd are holding a TAX DAY vigil on the 15th. Call 218-264-2328 if you are interested and want to become involved.
The Legacy is presenting the next series of musicales April 25-April 27. Aitken First Lutheran Church at 7:30, April 25. Cross Lake Lutheran Church at 7:30, April 26. And at Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd, April 27 at 3:30. The Legacy Chorale will be featured, and if you have ever heard them, you will remember how wonderful these voices are. The program is called Legacy on Broadway!

Last night, April 3rd, the third event was held at Happy Dancing Turtle in the series on food issues. The topic was Toxic Taters: "No more toxic taters: Transitioning to sustainable Potato Production in MN." The presenters were from the Pesticide Action Network, and included organizer Lex Horan; Carol Ashley; and Bob Shimek, from White Earth Reservation. With a short film and discussion, the problems of pesticide toxic drift were outlined, principally from the activities in the state by RDOffutt's growing and spraying practices in their potato farming in western MN. Since McDonalds is the main customer from this supplier, PAN is calling for pressure from that company to require RDO to reduce the use of harmful pesticides that affect animal life, fish life, bird life, probably human life. Of interest is the fact that RDO has now acquired 1600 acres of new potato cropland in Cass County, bringing this issue even close to home along with the potential problems.
