Jan 11 - Dave Jurgenson on o"Questioning Our Paradigms", discussion of how media spin information and how we can respond.
Jan 25 - What are you reading? open discussion.
Feb 8 - A UU Sermon
Feb 22 - The New Jim Crow, a UUA common read on race and social justice
Mar 8 - Spring Break; no service
Mar 22 - Women's History Month
Apr 12 - Speaker, Gary Dietrich tentatively, life coach in Bemidji
Apr 26 - Book Discussion, possibly Braiding Sweetgrass, by Robin Wall Kimmerer
May 10 - Flower Service
May 24 - Annual meeting, place and time TBA

As you can see, this is fluid and these are the basic outlines.

The rest of the planning meeting was devoted to

Post 60

To continue where I got cut off...

The rest of the planning meeting was devoted to  the Strategic Plan Review, following up from the initial meeting on February 7. We found we have made progress in nearly all areas, and that our move to a Sunday service was probably a good one. The addition of a musical dimension was very welcome, and the fact that we are able to order lunch onsite, if we pleased or not, was also helpful. New Songbooks were a product of a lot of work; website work ably handled by our webmaster, Melissa (also the music provider). We are thinking of once again partnering with Happy Dancing Turtle on food programs; also of holding an open house during the summer to enhance our presence in the community. In addition we have requested an Intern from Minnesota UU Social Justice Alliance to help gear up on the Renaming of Columbus Day efforts. More on this as plans develop.

POST 57

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River, MN 12/13/14

Greetings! it has been a month or so since the last report. Waiting out the elections, postponements of meetings, and other delays have slowed things down.
  • Renaming Columbus Day. Elections have changed some members of the MN legislature around the state. We are thinking of revamping the schedule of activities to forward the goal of changing the October 12 date to one including Indigenous People's Day, probably starting in March 2015. Our request to Governor Dayton for a proclamation for this year went unanswered; so this will be tried again. We are asking help from MUUSJA's intern to work on the Minneapolis connections at NACDI who intend to go statewide with this effort. (Native American Community Development Institute)...The request to supporters is to get the names of their legislators, contact them for their thoughts on this subject, and depending on responses, ask for support and action in bringing this to the legislative bodies for action.
  • Planning meetings have been delayed again and again, so definitive schedules need to be developed at this late date, for future programming. On December 19, a planning meeting to discuss progress toward meeting the goals set at the Strategy Meeting last spring. will be held at Mary's house at 12:30.
  • The November Thanksgiving dinner was a huge success, with many attending to celebrate the season and fellowship. Next time we have have to find a hall!
  • Truth and Reconciliation: On December 3, NUUF members traveled to Bemidji to participate in the initial gathering on T&R held at the American Indian Resource Center on the BSU campus. About 70 people came, including many native people, to discuss ways to improve conditions between the local cultures, Native and White. The next meeting will be on February 11.

Post 56

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River 11-01-2014

Greetings, Friends and Fellowtravelers: After a busy October, where we saw the completion of the fall series on Feast, Film, and Forum at Happy Dancing Turtle, continuing work on Renaming Columbus Day, and two services at Timberjack, we are looking ahead to November activities. On Nov 9, we will be discussing  "Behind the Kitchen Door", a UUA recommended book. Barbara Kaufman wrote up the following notes on this subject:
"On Nov. 9 we will be discussing the book Behind the Kitchen Door
by Saru Jayaraman (Cornell University Press 2013). This book reveals the
challengesof being employed in the restaurant industry. These range
from low wages and lack of sick leave to disrespect and lack of
opportunity to advance at the hands of management. Does it have to be
this way? Are there things we as consumers, can do to improve the
       situation?"

Also on November 9th, Pat Scott, NUUF President, will present a talking circle at the United Methodist Church, Brainerd, on the topic of  addressing native issues, as a part of Native American Heritage Month (November). This will be at the weekly forum at the Church.

In addition, there are several events taking place through Central Lakes Community College regarding native topics; Anton Truer is scheduled to speak on Nov. 12 at the Chalberg Theater 12 to 12:50. On Nov. 18, Mary Sam will speak on healing the impact of American Indian Boarding Schools, from 9 to 9:50 at room E354. On Nov. 19, Dr. Donna Brown will speak on American Indian Mascots, at the Chalberg Theatre 12 to 12:50.

On Nov. 22, the annual NUUF Thanksgiving dinner will be held at Mary's house in Pine River at noon. RSVPs are requested, if not already taken care of.

The newsletter has just been posted; if there are questions or corrections, or other matters, please feel free to contact us.

Post 56

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River MN 10/16/14

Greetings! Things are moving right along in a couple of areas on our social justice endeavors. First, on the Pipeline Protest. Union Church in Hackensack is working on signage along hwy 371, to show a visible protest to Sandpiper plans by Enbridge through the Minnesota watershed. The latest here, is that the State Department has granted Enbridge (in Canada) access to move their pipeline 67 south from the Cass Lake area to the Sandpiper. Enbridge does not have permission even to begin the Sandpiper as yet, still under route study by the PUC. The Sierra Club is contacting members to build a case against this action, so you may get a call if you are an active or paid member....

Regarding Renaming Columbus Day: we have had several planning meetings and contacts with others on this, finding there is a lot of interest in various areas, and although not a lot of action as yet, still people are beginning to look at this as a viable and desirable change. The Circle of Support in GR held a meeting on the 14th to ask if that city should change the holiday to one honoring the native community; I have not had feedback yet, but even if it was less than hoped for, we should not forget that persistence is the key on these things.....On November 9th, Pat Scott, president of NUUF, will be addressing the Forum at the UCC church in Brainerd, with a talking circle discussing native American heritage, the Columbus Day proposed change, and other issues related to truth and reconciliation....Recently, Melissa Birch and I met with Dr. Anton Treuer to talk about our efforts; he said there will be a Truth and Reconciliation meeting at the College (BSU) on Oct. 20, with the goal of building bridges across racial and cultural divides. We mentioned this at our meeting with the Social Justice group at Hackensack Union Church yesterday, and some of those attending indicated interest in attending also. So there will be an outside contingent at this gathering, including NUUF members.

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship,  Brainerd/Pine River MN Sept.30, 2014

Greetings! We have been working on Renaming Columbus Day rather intensely for the past recent weeks. Starting with a contact with Frank Bibeau, the attorney for White Earth Reservation working on pipeline issues, we asked for contacts we might approach to open dialog with the native community. He suggested talking with Annamarie Hill, executive director for the MN Indian Affairs Council. I had a very informative and delightful telephone conversation with her, and on her suggestion, wrote Jay Badheart Bull, of the Native American Community Development Institute, one of the major initiators of the Mpls City Council change from Columbus Day on their official stationery to Indigenous People's Day. Mr. Bull sent information on the strategy that was set up to accomplish this, at the end of which, on the day of the vote, hundreds of supporters turned up to support the change. His organization is planning to use the same approaches in St Paul, and going statewide in 2015! good news for us!!
This was a circuitous route, but is building a great base for contacts as we go. In addition, we heard from Pilgrim House (UU), and Unity Unitarian, from the letter campaign, supporting the effort. In addition, and this is really great, people in Grand Rapids are holding an event on October 14, asking if that city should make the change; sponsored by Circles of Support, it will be held at the public library. The panelists include one person on our ad hoc email list, who are in support of our work. Circles is a native group.
A Brainerd city councilman, Chip Borgenhagen, introduced a motion to change from Columbus Day to a day honoring native people, but he felt that the negative comments published in the Dispatch were too virulent to deal with, and withdrew his motion.
We at NUUF, are considering the Renaming of Columbus Day as a vehicle to engage the public in the broader effort to educate regarding the Doctrine of Discover, and the need to repudiate its effects in law, culture, societal relations. A great first step in a very visible way, with something everyone knows about.
On the pipeline protest front, Enbridge is delaying construction, not yet able to meet the need of the Public Utilities Commission to look at other routes outside the northern watershed region. If there had not been so much opposition, they would already be laying pipe!

Post 54

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River MN 9/16/14

Greetings, UUs and fellow travelers! It is now midSeptember, and the summer flurries and activities are winding down. Pipeline Protests are continuing with much discussion about these environmental issues facing our State. You might want to check the PUC website, to see where all this stands at the moment.

We began our effort to rename Columbus Day to honor our native American population, sending a proposed proclamation to Governor Dayton for his consideration for this fall. Also contacted by letter all the UUs across the state, and results of that are slowly coming in. We were delighted to hear that the city of Brainerd was considering such a change, with Chip Borkenhagen, city councilman leading that discussion. It was tabled, and readdressed yesterday, Monday Sept. 15. Again it has been tabled, and Chip recently asked to have his proposal taken off the table indefinitely. He received a lot of negative feedback through the press, and said in a memo to the Council, "clearly the vocal minority  has moaned loud enough to foul the air to the degree that I don't wish to pursue it....if Columbus were alive today, and it was discovered he had done the 'atrocities that he did in fact do, he would be tried as a terrorist and war criminal." So Brainerd Council has not followed the lead of Mpls or Red Wing or other places across the US in making a change, at least not now....Our email committee is continuing to explore strategies and will be reporting from time to time.

Our first meeting at theTimberjack turned out well, and next Sunday, we will welcome Rev. Suzanne Wasilczuk back for another Sermon,  this time called The Profit of Prophets. 11am.

The first of the fall meetings on food preservation was held Sept. 11, with Barbara Kaufman presenting information on seed saving. More to come on this series.

Stay tuned.

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River MN 8/25/14

A quick note today. We sent out letters to all the UU congregations in Minnesota, asking for input on developing a day to honor the native Americans in our state, as an alternative to Columbus Day, on the first Monday in October. It will take legislative action to change the statute governing holidays, so work is cut out already. In addition, our President drafted a proposed proclamation for the Governor, declaring that date a day to honor native populations. We do not expect that action will take place by the legislature for this year, but can start planning strategies to act together on this issue. Governor Dayton could proclaim the day for 2014, as this submission is in time for him to do that. He is in election campaign mode at the moment; we will see what happens. If not this year, we can resubmit until it happens! more on this as things develop.

Greetings! Last night, Honor the Earth held their Pine River event at the Commons, Pine River-Backus school. After a very successful meeting in Brainerd on Tuesday at the Arboretum, the Horse Ride traveled here to meet with supporters of the Pipeline Protests, share a potluck supper, and talk about the current state of affairs at the PUC, still in process of approving or modifying routes for the pipelines to cross Minnesota. It is clear Enbridge is going full steam ahead "as if" it is all done in their favor. However, according to Winona LaDuke, in her presentation, protests have made significant impacts, in that the whole process has been delayed, giving an opportunity to develop opposition and encourage a moratorium movement. If you go to Honor Earth's webpage, there is a petition you can sign to support this effort.....NUUF's part in all this was to find a location for the speakers and for the horses to pasture overnight. Barb Kaufman was the point person, and worked many hours to bring it about. We also set up the supper table, provided drinks and utensils, etc. Little enough, considering the issues at stake. We were entertained by Annie Humphrey, native singer, and young men performing some native songs. I did not catch their names, but obviously very talented. Many of the riders joined us later in the evening...and we were happy to see formerly active UUs, Union Church people, Grand Rapids UUs, and lots of others in the audience. Preaching to the choir, actually, but that is good and sustaining and heartening.

The September newsletter will be out shortly, looking ahead to a great fall.

Greetings! today NUUF members met with Happy Dancing Turtle to plan for the fall Feast, Film & Forum series of events on food preservation. The dates are: Sept. 11, Sept. 25, Oct. 9, and Oct. 23. Starting with an optional potluck at 5:30, the programs will begin at 6pm. The topics are: Seed Saving; Alternative Preservation; Herbs for Health; and AgroForestry. There will be films and panels to provide information and discussion. We are hoping to see all the gardeners from the spring and others interested in safe food growing and preservation. To start off, our Barb Kaufman will share from the recent workshops at Seed Savers, and their enthusiastic work in this field. All the meetings will be held at the HUG campus just off 371 west of Pine River.

In other news, plans are proceeding for the Honor the Earth Horse Ride to be coming through Pine River on Aug. 20. The meeting will be held at the PR-B school Commons from 6-8, potluck, with speeches and music. Thanks, Barb, on all your work on this!  The September newsletter should be out the last week of the month.

Post 50

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River  7/23/14

Greetings friends and UUs: Even though traditionally UUs are off on vacations over the summer months, a lot is happening. July 7th was the kickoff for the Horse Ride at the corner store near Backus, where Honor the Earth began pipeline protests. This gained a lot of public media attention. Winona LaDuke spoke and began the ride over to Park Rapids. Now another is planned, scheduled to go through Brainerd and other points, including Pine River on August 20th. NUUF is involved with Union Church in helping facilitate this event, and anyone who wishes to help can look at honorearth.org, the site where the best and most current information is to be had. Or call me, and I can direct you.

We began another initiative, this time to rename Columbus Day to a  day to honor the native community. Discussions include writing a draft proclamation to send to Governor Dayton, which would be in time for this year, hopefully. First, the task is to see if the native community would welcome this, and if so, what name should it have. The thought is, not to have this just another panacea for white consciences "do-gooder" paternalistic impulses, but something to forward education in the white community in cultural understanding, reduction of discrimination. Following the lead of South Dakota, the City of Minneapolis, and other places who have already addressed this, it seems high time our State took this action of respect and recognition, long overdue. We have partnered with Union Church, and hope to enlist other churches. The next effort would be to get the Legislature to pass a law adding the holiday to the statute which governs such recognition. It does not have to replace Columbus Day which is a federal holiday, but could be an additional option; that is to be determined.

Comments and ideas are welcome! watch the website, mnnuuf.org, for more information.

Greetings! the Horse Ride event organized by Honor the Earth, and Union Church in Hackensack that took place on Monday July 7, was well attended, and a lot of media representatives were present as well, for the kick off on Sandpiper pipeline protests, with later rides planned for August. This latter one will go through or nearby in Pine River, so at NUUF, we are thinking of ways to cooperate and facilitate, and generally be helpful. Many of us were on deck on Monday, and lots of pictures resulted, in local and farther afield newspapers; there was coverage also by radio and TV, and a later interview that aired on the Ed Show on MSNBC. This is all exciting, and hopefullly will bring attention to the pending assault on our local environment in the watershed. Of course the star is Winona LaDuke, a dynamic speaker and committed activist on this issue. Stay tuned as plans develop!

There is a Yikes! Bikes! event taking place on July 12, a bike ride in support of Habitat for Humanity, organized by Ted Chisholm. There will be rest stops in Walker, LaPorte, Cass Lake. For more information contact Ted at chisholmtf@gmail.com.

Hope you are having a wonderful summer!

Greetings! Brainerd Area Coalition for Peace is holding a vigil on Sunday, June 29, in protest of further military action in Iraq. Between 1 and 2:30 at the intersection of 371 and 210 (near Kohl's), signs will be available.

The Union Church in Hackensack is working with Honor the Earth on pipeline protests, and is planning a horse ride including Winona LaDuke on July 8th, from Godfrey's on 371 to Park Rapids, starting at noon. Since plans are still in the making, more information will be forthcoming. Frank Bibeau is the point person from HTE.

Hope the summer is going well for everyone!

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River 6/19/14

Greetings! Yesterday, I attended the social justice committee meeting at the Union Church in Hackensack, which held a session with Frank Bibeau specifically on the Sandpiper pipeline, and efforts to stop the expansion by Enbridge in northern Minnesota. Chaired by Sara Cox, she had distributed the following information about Frank:
" Frank Bibeau is a Native American and an attorney who is a member of the White Earth tribe, I believe, but is active in the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. He lives in Deer River. He has been Tribal Attorney for LLBO Several times. Along with Winona LaDuke and her Honor the Earth coalition, he is working to get the State and federal governments to require a change of route for the Sandpiper pipeline in order to protect wild rice waters and the lakes area generally.
"Given that the mission of the task force is to try to be better neighbors, I think it is well within our mission to support this effort of our Native American
neighbors to protect their treaty-approved hunting and fishing rights and the future of all of our children in this region of Minnesota...."

I brought along a folder of information we had gathered before and during the three sessions held last fall on this matter, partnering with Happy Dancing Turtle. The meeting was well attended. Frank talked about the final decision by the PUC to be made May 2015. I notice they are still accepting comments from the public at the Commission. As I understand, the position of the tribes is that any pipeline encroaching on Native lands would not be permitted, with treaty rights to back this up; they would recommend alternative routes by the 29/94 highway routes be considered. There are no good immediate answers to this dilemma. His idea is that gaining the support of the legislature to declare a moritorium on pipeline expansion, for the short term, would be a good way to start. He is concentrating his work on the Sandpiper at this time.

The group decided to set up a steering committee to begin work on strategies for moving forward. Leading this will be Lindsey Ketchell, Lake Area Association head in Hackensack. Also a link to Frank on these matters may be found at honorearth.org.

Very likely, NUUF will be in support of these activities in some manner.

"Alison Edgerton, Pat Scott, Barb Kaufman, and Luann Rice represented NUUF at the Brainerd Pride Picnic this year. Along with most other booths, ours was protected by a canopy tent provided by Alison. We displayed colored bottles of bubble soap, NUUF business cards, magazines and printed literature, including a NUUF brochure and a copy of the summer NUUF newsletter. Several people stopped by to look and take bubble soap. Quite a few people took business cards, a newsletter copy and/or other UU literature. One woman left her name and contact information." -Pat Scott, President

Please check the website for summer activities.

Other news: the Bellingham WA UUs are involved with the Totem Pole initiative that is promoting resistance to coal and oil/gas transport through the Lummi Nations' lands. Check out their website via google for more information. Apparently this totem pole is set to travel throughout the western states to gather support. Beth Brownfield is our source for information. Greetings, friends and NUUFers: The June newsletter is not out yet, because we are still working out locations and dates for the fall. We are making a real effort to find a Sunday venue, still central for most, and think there is a possibility. Until then, keep a watch here for news.

A planning meeting was held on May 28 at Lakes Latte in Pequot Lakes. Progress on locations was discussed, disposition of the Travelin Truth Telling Tour books accomplished. We set a tentative schedule as follows:

Sept 13,14  Water Service  Melissa
Sept 27,28 Letting Go of God PartI   Mary
Oct 11,12  Goodbye Columbus
Oct 25,26 Letting Go of God PartII   Alison

We have asked Suzanne Wasilczuk to come for a guest sermon during this period, and as yet have not firmed up a date until we get the location decided. So plans are subject to change.

A letter has been sent to Bob Whipple, for suggestions on persons who might be interested in acting as liaison with us from the Leech Lake Band, for the purpose of proposing a change in the MN laws to include a native American day on the date set aside for Columbus Day. We will be gathering support for this among the northern tier of UU congregations, and have the commitment of Mesabi UU Church for a start, as well as interest from the Union Church in Hackensack. I will see Bob on the 9th.

We checked on powwows coming up as a possible excursion on a picnic date this summer, as well as a trip to The Farm at St Matthias, to be decided.

Thanks for your patience! Respectfully submitted, Mary DeYoung, News Director NUUF  218-587-2543

Greetings: On May 17, we were honored to have a guest minister conducting our service, Rev. Suzanne Wasilczuk from Duluth. She serves Mesabi Unitarian Church in Virginia, as well as consults in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and several other venues around the UU circuit. The subject was Rhythms of Life, filled with song and inspiration for living the joyful life. We were happy to have Drew Hines, guitarist, to accompany the hymns and provide the prelude. As the last scheduled meeting in the 13/14 calendar, it was a perfect uplifting close to the year.... Now, the summer will have picnics, the next at the Gay Pride gathering in Brainerd on June 14, where we will have a table and presence in support of solidarity with that part of the community. In July and August, the picnics will probably be held at the Pine River park; watch this column for details.

Today, we held a planning meeting with Happy Dancing Turtle, for a series of fall events for which we will partner, on harvesting and other agricultural practices. The dates are Sept. 11, 25; October 9, 23. More updates will be posted as programs are developed.

Greetings! We have been seeking to retire the Travelin Truth Telling Tour of Native American author's books, and have found a home for them at Central Lakes College in Brainerd. The Humphrey Center for American Indian Studies is located in the Skone Family Conservatory and is part of the library in the east wing of the Brainerd CLC Campus. The main area is a museum housing interpretive displays on Ojibway culture. It also houses more than 3000 books, research materials, resources and programming on American Indian cultures and related issues.  Although our donation is small, we are delighted that they will be added to a collection dedicated to preserving and promoting writing by Native authors in the spirit of truth telling about the past, and reconciliation. This is a furtherance of our goals as stated in the 2011 Resolution on the Condition of the Indigenous People, to promote education and understanding between the cultures.

The transfer should take place after June 2, when the summer sessions start and the library is open.

Greetings! the final event in the series Feast, Film&Forum was held this evening at Happy Dancing Turtle, in co-sponsorship with NUUF. The topic was GMOs, a film presentation by Jeffrey Smith, based on his book Seeds of Deception. His lecture was an expose of the additions of genetically modified entities into the food chain by chemical companies, and the cover up by those in government responsible for regulation and protection of the consuming public. This is the last in the series of five public meetings on food issues, and covered a wide range of concerns for food production in a safe and healthy manner. We were pleased to be part of this educational effort, and plans are under discussion to hold more meetings in the fall on harvesting.

Recently an email went out to newsletter recipients, asking for comments on our proposal to write a Resolution calling for a rescinding of the Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court, the one which recognizes corporations as people with rights thereto. We set a deadline of this weekend, but will delay an actual vote until members have returned from summer break. If you received the request, we would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this as soon as possible, so we can complete language for the Resolution. Your attention will be greatly appreciated!

Greetings! just a line to say that the fifth Feast Film & Forum event was held last night at Happy Dancing Turtle with excellent attendance. The topic was Bees, with films and Don Jackson on hand to field questions about the current state of affairs in bees and honey production. As you probably have heard, the numbers of bees have been in sharp decline in recent years, due to various factors, and mainly from pesticide use. So much so, that major crop production that depends on pollination (like most plants) are coming under threat. In attendance were several bee keepers, with different levels of experience from beginners to veterans, and great questions. The main film was Tales From the Hive, a NOVA production, and then a televised interview with Don from TPT. He encourages people to join the North Central Bee Keepers Association which meets regularly in Brainerd. Go online for information.

We are exploring a further series in the fall, featuring Harvesting. Stay tuned for this.

Greetings! The annual business meeting was held yesterday at Mary's house in Pine River. Routine matters were addressed and a tentative calendar set through December. The month of May still has two meetings scheduled, one on May 10 to assemble packets for STOP to be given to sexual assault victims coming into the Brainerd program. The second meeting is on May 17th, where we will welcome our guest pastor, Suzanne Wasilczuk, for her sermon of song and hope. We are planning for a good turnout!

Plans are moving forward on several fronts. We will be looking into fund raising opportunities, not a garage sale this year! But perhaps something we can offer in several venues as events move along....The TTTT is still with us, and emails have gone out to Fargo-Morehead UUs and Anton Truer at BSU as possible locations as hosts; also CLC has indicated they would accept certain titles, perhaps in their Native American collection, so that is not ruled out. We have perhaps 25-30 titles at this writing, mostly Native American authors.....a bookplate would be very nice, to explain the source and goals of the Tour.

Over the summer, when usually a monthly picnic is scheduled, we decided to join the Pride picnic at the Kiwanis Park in Brainerd on June 14, where we could set up a table with information and perhaps items for the public, making available the calendar and handouts. July 12 and August 16 are dates set for picnics at Pine River in the park.

For the fall programs, although nor yet firmed up, a Water Service in September, Letting Go of God in September and October, Columbus in October, a Thanksgiving dinner at Mary's and discussion of Behind the Kitchen Door in November, Solstice party at Barb's and Chalica celebration in December. Please watch the newsletter, this blog, and the website for better information. This is ambitious, but enthusiasm abounds!

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River MN 4/12/14

Greetings! Today we met for the second annual Flower Celebration, in honor of Dr. Norbert Capek, founder of the Czech Unitarian Church in Prague in the 20s.
He originated the Flower Service, in which members and visitors bring flowers for exchange, to commemorate the return of spring and recommitment to the Church. His story is a moving one, being arrested and killed by the Nazis in 1942. We do not have many so martyred in UU history, and surely he is not alone; but his courage and devotion to his beliefs are to be emulated and remembered.

A couple of announcements. The next meeting has been moved to April 16, at 10:30, at Mary's house in Pine River. We will be doing annual business, electing officers, taking care of the budget, setting the calendar. A potluck lunch will be provided. Any UUs and like minded fellow travelers are welcome to attend and get involved. This takes the place of the regularly schedules meeting on April 26.

The Peace folks in Brainerd are holding a TAX DAY vigil on the 15th. Call 218-264-2328 if you are interested and want to become involved.

The Legacy is presenting the next series of musicales April 25-April 27. Aitken First Lutheran Church at 7:30, April 25. Cross Lake Lutheran Church at 7:30, April 26. And at Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd, April 27 at 3:30. The Legacy Chorale will be featured, and if you have ever heard them, you will remember how wonderful these voices are. The program is called Legacy on Broadway!

Last night, April 3rd, the third event was held at Happy Dancing Turtle in the series on food issues. The topic was Toxic Taters: "No more toxic taters: Transitioning to sustainable Potato Production in MN." The presenters were from the Pesticide Action Network, and included organizer Lex Horan; Carol Ashley; and Bob Shimek, from White Earth Reservation. With a short film and discussion, the problems of pesticide toxic drift were outlined, principally from the activities in the state by RDOffutt's growing and spraying practices in their potato farming in western MN. Since McDonalds is the main customer from this supplier, PAN is calling for pressure from that company to require RDO to reduce the use of harmful pesticides that affect animal life, fish life, bird life, probably human life. Of interest is the fact that RDO has now acquired 1600 acres of new potato cropland in Cass County, bringing this issue even close to home along with the potential problems. If you are interested in more information, go to www.toxictaters.org, or find them on facebook.

April 12 is the date for the Flower Service, at the Nisswa Library. It is held by many UU congregations in honor of Norbert Capek, martyred by the Nazis, and the originator of the Flower Service in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s. Bring a flower for exchange if you can, and some will be available as well.

Greetings! Today, the first day of real spring- like weather, we traveled to Underwood Unitarian Church to pick up the Travelin Truth Telling Tour books, on loan for the past few months. In time for a wonderful service, the topic was "Women's History Portrayals." This was organized and written up by Sandra Barnhouse, and the participants  acted the  parts of significant women of the past. Sandra took the part of various Greek and Chinese characters from mythology as the moderator; the parts were women and one man from the congregation, playing Dolley Madison; Sojourner Truth; Maria Goepper Mayer; Rachel Carson; and Meridel LeSeur. The one male voice was Hermes messenger to the Gods. As is the custom in this church, there was great music, piano, violin, and accordian doing Norwegian dances. And a chili lunch after. We renewed our acquaintances from last fall's workshop, and felt renewed by being in a bunch of Unitarians with all the interests and passions of a liberal church body. Just wish they were not so far away!

Don't forget, the third Feast Film and Forum meeting is on Thursday this week, and we will have a program on toxic drift from potato farming. 5:30 optional potluck, program at 6pm at Happy Dancing Turtle! free and open to the public.

This evening the second of the series on food issues, Feast, Film & Forum, was held at Happy Dancing Turtle. In place of films, a panel of guests talked about local food promotion, production, and marketing. Panelists included grass finished beef producers; vegetable growers; and members of the Farm at St Mathias. The audience included NUUF members, the proprietors of the local grocery, farmer's market advocates, and other farmers and gardeners. This was a lively meeting, with everyone asking pertinent questions and discussing possibilities and problems. A chance to build connections and network was taken advantage of, leaving us with a sense of accomplishment and cohesion in making a new beginning, possibly new friends in a broader community.

The next in the series will be on April 3rd, and the topic will be "No More Toxic Taters: Transitioning to Sustainable Potato Production in MN."  - of especial interest to potato growers, and other gardeners.

Greetings! NUUF will hold its regular meeting on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the Nisswa Children's Library, Nisswa. The topic will be services to the mentally ill, and will feature the film, "Hope for Recovery", a production of Twin Cities Television and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, or NAMI. In addition, there will be two representatives from recovery programs who will discuss their experiences with available services. We hope that open discussion will expose some of the stigmas that surround mental illness, and that as people become more informed, more help will be available to the patients and their families, as they try to cope with these devastating conditions. Mental illness affects an astonishing number of Americans and their families, with eleven million sufferers of the most severe kind. Probably you, or someone you know has had contact with people in this situation. We invite everyone to join us in learning more and understanding what can be of help. The service starts at 11am, with coffee available at 10:40 and a potluck lunch to follow. The Nisswa Children's Library is located at 5533 County Road 18, Nisswa.  (News Release for 3/23/14)

This week also features the Thursday evening second event of Feast, Film & Forum, with a panel of local food producers leading the discussion. At 5:30, an optional potluck, program starting at 6pm, at Happy Dancing Turtle just west of 371 by the wind tower!

This evening the Public Utilities Commission held a public meeting in Pine River, to provide a forum for citizens to question Enbridge Corporation officials on issues surrounding its application for expansion of the Sandpiper pipeline into the local area. Held at the Pine River-Backus School, the meeting was well attended and many questions were asked on various aspects of Enbridge's plans. Some of these had to do with waterways and watersheds protections; with leak concerns and safety concerns; with the company's history on dealing with leaks; with alternate routes; and the fact that the company is already working on leases with land owners and has paid money out, in advance of their approval. Marty Cobenais, formerly of the Indigenous Environmental Network, spoke about the larger environmental concerns and specific problems with this pipeline company, asking questions of the officials that were left largely unanswered. NUUF members were present in force, following up on our earlier and present concerns on this issue. We are continuing to monitor the journey through the process, and will add to the commentary until a final decision is made. Barb Kaufman was one of the speakers, asking for explanations on spills. Keep tuned.

Hello. Yesterday at the March 8th service in Nisswa, we welcomed Arlene Jones as speaker, and enjoyed her talk on SPROUT (sustainable food production at the local level), and the farm enterprise she runs at The Farm on St. Mathias, south of Brainerd. She is working toward developing a Food Hub in the region, works on farm to school programs and works with USDA, and the MN Dept. of Agriculture promoting Community Supported Agriculture and with other community organizations to bring education and feasibility to local farmers and develop local markets. For more detailed information please contact: www.sprout.com; stmathiasfarm@gmail.com; or visit on the web: www.thefarmonstmathias.com. Arlene invites visitors to the Farm, which does an annual corn maze, wagon rides, hosts weddings, educational events, tours, demonstrations, festivals, and is a great destination for people interested in learning about sustainable gardening and growing.

Arlene says the Farm is sponsoring the 4th Annual Seriously Local Beer Tasting event (featuring their beer) at Prairie Bay on Saturday, April 25; the 5th Annual Midsummer Faire & Celtic Celebration at the Farm on Saturday, July 26.

Our next service is on March 29 at the library in Nisswa, 11am, with a program on services for mentally ill persons, including two Peer Consultants from the community. All are welcome!

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River MN. March 7.

The first of the five meetings, Feast, Film &Forum, scheduled at Happy Dancing Turtle was held last night, March 6th, with a pot luck and program on young farmers and sustainable agriculture. We were pleased to have the Schramm and Brakstad families talking about their experiences as local farmers, the Brakstad parents longstanding farm residents near Pequot Lakes, and the younger Schramms starting their enterprise and raising their young family, and showing such enthusiasm and love for their work. The discussion followed a film called "The Greenhorns," about young farmers around the country and the challenges they meet in the marketplace and life in general.

The next program in this series will be held on March 20 with a local foods panel, "movers and shakers in the growing local foods movement." Again, an optional potluck at 5:30, program at 6pm. These programs are sponsored in partnership by NUUF and Happy Dancing Turtle.

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River  Feb.29, 2014

Greetings! the March Newsletter has just been completed, and I apologize for any shortcomings. I have been plagued by printer and computer problems for the whole month of February; now up and running and fingers crossed.

A couple of things; the PUC public meeting for comments on the Sandpiper proposal by Enbridge, is scheduled for March 12 at the PR-B school between 6 and 9pm. Local people who attended our gas/oil films and meetings earlier may wish to come and face these people in the flesh! The latest notices from PUC have Enbridge's whole plan, so you might want to research this ahead of time. Of course, they do not see anything wrong with going ahead, being concerned with the bottom line, always. They see no farther than their noses. Certainly not into the future when more leaks occur and more poisoning of the environment makes life untenable. Thanks to Barb Kaufman, who submitted a well reasoned letter to the editor on this topic recently.

And I did not have room to make comment on our workshop goals and plans, some of which are beginning to start up. Melissa and I met to discuss public relations, and need to develop a source page for newspaper and other media outlets, to use for disseminating information. Melissa and Pat are working on development of music programs by revising and updating the Songbook; Alison is contributing the player and some music, Melissa has purchased some CDs as well. We need to establish this in the budget as an ongoing expense. Also Melissa has started a resource page for the website, on which books and CDs and other items of interest can be listed for lending and program planning. I am sure that as we study the workshop plans, we will see some results develop for positive change and growth of our congregation.

The first of five meetings on food issues will be held on March 6th. This one features the film, The Greenhorns, about beginning farmers, and a discussion with a panel of speakers. At the HUG campus, and in partnership with Happy Dancing Turtle, there will be optional potlucks at 5:30, programs at 6. HDT is located just off Highway2 in Pine River, on the west side. Call for further information at 218-587-2303 or google www.happydancingturtle. org.

Post 28

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Brainerd/Pine River MN 2/8/14

Greetings! A couple of items to report on today from this week's activity. On Wednesday, Barbara and Mary met with Happy Dancing Turtle folks, Quinn, Jim and Barb to discuss and plan for a series of programs on food issues. This will be a partnered series by NUUF and HDT. Topics will include: a potato panel; GMOs; local organic producers; bees; and young farmers. Dates were set up: March 6 and 20; April 3, 17; and May 1. These are Thursday nights, 5pm potluck dinner; 6pm, program. There will be films and speakers, either or both. We will help with publicity and other aspects as this is in development.

The other very exciting day was yesterday, Friday February 7th, when we met for a day-long workshop to set new goals for the coming year. This will be elaborated on later, via newsletter and website. But basically, we had the services of Barb Mann as facilitator, to help reexamine the mission statement, and set goals for the Fellowship, going back to the UU principles as the basis for programs and activities. Three main ideas were discussed and refined. Paraphrasing; One: practice a nurturing and stimulating format for gathering, to stretch our spiritual growth and strengthen our connections. Two: effectively serve as a catalyst in connecting with the broader community, acting on our principles and increasing our visibility. Three: grow our gathering body as a home for religious liberals. Tasks were assigned and dates for completion developed. Some very concrete 'how-to's' came out of this, concrete directions, which when set down on paper, illustrate a clearer road-map to achievement than we have had. More details will be forthcoming. This was a very inspiring way to look at our problems and figure out practical ways to address them. Many thanks to Barb Mann for guiding us through the process and making this work so rewarding!

Dates for meetings have been problematical. In February, the next date is Feb. 15, at the Nisswa Library. The Spirit of Life program will continue, from the UUA Tapestry series. Melissa will lead. March dates are being changed, so watch the newsletter and the blog for details.

Post 27

Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, January 18, 2014

We have been relatively inactive for a few weeks, mainly due to severe weather, which has impacted on many activities for many people and groups in the area. Today's service was held at the Nisswa Library; the topic was a Tapestry Service from the UUA website, called Spirit of Life: Exploring Spirituality for UUs. Since this is part of a series of programs, and was experienced so positively, we agreed to continue using this format from time to time. Today it centered on activities and participation by the members that focused on personal experiences and examination of understanding of this undefined realm on the individual level.

Discussion of future meetings led to a decision to cancel January 25th, which was to be a celebration of Martin Luther King's Day. The presenter will be unable to attend. So the next date is February 7th, when we will have a short Service on Standing on the Side of Love, and then a workshop on setting goals and the mission for the Fellowship, with the assistance of Barb Mann as facilitator. This will be held at Mary DeYoung's, 618 3rd St N., Pine River at 10:30. Pot luck lunch. A reminder: Back to Basics is held at the PR-B school on February 1st, with many workshops and artists/artisans work on display. Usually, we are present.
