The Coffeehouse on November 17 was a big success, raising $130 after expenses. This money helped to provide Personal Care Holiday Gift bags for inmates at Oklahoma’s Mabel Bassett Women’s Maximum Security Prison. These gift bags contain basic items such as shampoos and lotions that the state prison system will not provide.

The Norman Christmas Holiday Parade is set for 10 AM Saturday, December 8. Our entry for the parade is being organized by Aimee Rook, so please call her at 360-3756 if you wish to participate.

NUUF currently has two Christmas charity collection drives running concurrently.
1) Please bring your children’s old toys to Sunday service to be wrapped for the children at the JD McCarty Center, Oklahoma’s “center of excellence” for children with developmental disabilities and other special needs.
2) Please bring your old clothes to Sunday service for Food and Shelter for Friends, a Norman-based charity that feeds hungry persons and provides shelter to homeless families, allowing them the chance to become self- sufficient.

Donations will be accepted at NUUF through Sunday, December 16.

Coffeehouse Fundraiser

7-10 p.m., Nov. 17
Featuring the eclectic sounds of Arabesque and the folk music of John Madison. We’ll also have an Open Mic session for musicians, singers, and poets from 7-8. Arabesque plays Celtic, Middle Eastern and styles from many other lands. John Madison plays traditional and original folk music in a powerful style. Proceeds will help provide Holiday Gift Bags of toiletries and other personal items for women inmates at Mable Bassett State Prison. Come enjoy an evening of music, food, and fun for a great cause. Bring your friends. Babysitting for $3 per child. Volunteers and food donations for the event are greatly appreciated.

Over 250 rapes were reported in Norman between 2000-05
The FBI estimates that only 1 in 10 rapes are reported, nationally

In 2004, the Women's Resource Center established the Rape Crisis Center to meet the special needs of sexual assault victims

· The RCC offers forensic exams, by specially trained volunteer nurses, in a setting that is much more private and nurturing than an emergency room. Victims can have a loved one or friend with them during the exam, usually not possible in an ER.

· Antibiotics to combat sexually transmitted disease and Plan B to prevent pregnancy are provided for free as part of the exam.

· Linkages to counseling are made faster than usually can be done in a hospital setting.

· Rape Response Team members, also volunteers, support the victim through the exam process and during investigative and legal procedures.

· Since opening, the RCC has helped over 100 victims, including men.
